Covenant Encourages People In (and Into) Recovery!

There was a day when cancer was a shameful disease for people - people felt guilty at the diagnosis, people didn't talk about it publicly, people didn't even share openly and honestly with their own families.  Two unfortunate realities then occurred - the disease raged undetected while misinformation ruled AND victims were not able to receive much needed love, care and support from their friends and family.  Even, perhaps especially, from their church family.

Here at Covenant, we believe the same unhelpful, unhealthy and, frankly, unholy, attitudes and actions are attached to addictive illnesses.  When a person suffers from an addictive illness, they live in a cycle of despair and self destruction that leads to death, incarceration or insanity.  Their family and friends, caught up in the disease, also live in a cycle of denial, dishonesty and despair.  In the same way, people in and in need of recovery often suffer in silence, even, perhaps especially, within their church family.

The Good News is that God LOVES addicts and their families!  There IS hope for recovery!  And the church, far from a feared place of judgment and shame, can TRULY be a place where healing grace happens in the lives of hurting people!

DivorceCare and GriefShare

DivorceCare is a weekly class designed to help people deal constructively with the multi-faceted pain of divorce.  Led by trained people who themselves have tasted divorce, this 13 week seminar will face the questions of anger, depression, kid care, financial survival and moving on with life.

GriefShare, also a 13 week seminar, is a small group experience that helps people talk and walk through the pain and loss of grief, especially the death of a parent, spouse or child.

Both classes are offered on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.  Child care is provided free of charge in the nursery, just inside the main church building.  The cost of each 13 week series is $20 for the participant workbook.  Call the church office (281-578-8799) for more information.

Palmer Drug Abuse Program

The Palmer Drug Abuse Program (PDAP) was founded in 1971 here in Houston, Texas. It has been providing free, quality substance abuse recovery services to teenagers and young adults for more than 33 years. They provide 12-step support group meetings, crisis intervention & referral, individual and family counseling sessions, and drug-free social and recreational activities for young people between the ages 12-25. They also provide recovery group meetings and other services for the parents of these young people.

PDAP is a fellowship of young people and parents who share their experience, love and understanding so that they may solve their common problems and help others recover from the effects of mind-changing chemicals.

The PDAP Program:

  • is administered with the highest level of integrity
  • is free to all participants
  • is spiritually-based on the twelve steps
  • provides social activities in a safe and supportive environment

Covenant is a proud supporter of the Houston Area PDAP Program.  PDAP parents and young people meet at Covenant every Monday evening.  For more information, go to  www.pdaphouston.org
